About the role

Our client is seeking an ambitious Junior Data Engineer to join a collaborative engineering team based in Lynnwood, Pretoria, with a hybrid working arrangement. This role is suited to a junior database professional looking to develop their expertise in SQL, relational databases, data integration, migrations and database performance optimisation.

The successful candidate will work within a Java-first engineering environment and contribute to enterprise-scale systems where reliable, high-performing data solutions are critical. The role offers exposure to complex database engineering, query optimisation, integrations and data migrations while working within a Scrum-based development environment.

• Strong practical SQL scripting skills.
• Good understanding of relational databases and ERD diagrams.
• Experience or exposure to Microsoft SQL Server 2016+.
• Knowledge of MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
• Understanding of Stored Procedures, views, data extraction and data validation.
• Exposure to data migrations and database integrations.
• Understanding of query planning and performance tuning.
• Basic knowledge of database administration, including backups, restores and SQL jobs.
• Familiarity with Java-based software environments and basic programming concepts.
• Basic A+ and N+ networking fundamentals would be advantageous.
• Strong communication, administration and teamwork skills.

What they're looking for

• Matric / Grade 12 – essential.
• Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Development, Data Engineering or a related field.
• Alternatively, a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification may be considered.
• Practical exposure to SQL and relational database fundamentals is required.
