About the role
Our client is seeking an experienced, technically skilled Assistant Chief Engineer to support the Engineering Department at an exclusive five-star private island resort in Fiji.
This is a senior, hands-on engineering leadership position requiring extensive experience in critical utility systems, preventative maintenance, resort infrastructure and technical team management.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Engineer, ensuring the reliability, safety and presentation of all resort facilities while assuming departmental leadership when formally delegated.
- Oversee daily engineering operations, maintenance activities and critical island utilities.
- Manage power generation, electrical distribution, diesel and fuel systems.
- Monitor desalination, water treatment, wastewater systems and pumping infrastructure.
- Coordinate maintenance of HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, pools and building services.
- Maintain guest villas, public areas, staff accommodation and operational facilities.
- Implement preventative maintenance programmes and prioritise urgent repairs.
- Supervise Engineering Supervisors, Team Leaders and technical staff.
- Coordinate daily work allocation, rosters, technical training and safety briefings.
- Oversee contractors, refurbishments and engineering improvement projects.
- Maintain effective maintenance records, work orders and technical reporting.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Support emergency preparedness, including utility failures, fires and severe weather.
- Assist with budgets, purchasing, critical spares and operational cost control.
- Act on behalf of the Chief Engineer when formally authorised.
What they're looking for
- Recognised trade qualification, diploma or degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Building Services, Facilities Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years' engineering or facilities maintenance experience.
- At least 2 years' supervisory experience.
- Previous luxury resort, hotel, remote-site or utility-plant experience highly advantageous.
- Strong practical knowledge of diesel generators and electrical distribution.
- Experience with water treatment, wastewater systems and pumps.
- Good understanding of HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing and building maintenance.
- Proven preventative maintenance and asset-management experience.
- Strong technical leadership, troubleshooting and organisational skills.
- Competence using maintenance systems, spreadsheets and written reports.
- Relevant licences and certifications, or eligibility to obtain those required under Fiji law.
- Current First Aid and emergency response training, or willingness to obtain it.
- Comfortable with rostered on-call duties and emergency response requirements.
- Adaptable and willing to work in a remote island environment.
